Preventive Measures for Different Types of Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer occurs in the thyroid cells. The thyroid is responsible for creating hormones that regulate one’s BP, heart rate, weight, and body temperature.
The common types of thyroid cancer have been listed as follows:
- Papillary thyroid cancer
- Follicular thyroid cancer
- Medullary thyroid cancer
- Anaplastic thyroid cancer
- Primary thyroid lymphoma
The types of thyroid cancer will help determine its prognosis as well as the treatment path.
1. Can the different types of thyroid cancer be prevented?
It may not be possible, in many instances, to prevent thyroid cancer. But, there are certain preventive tips that can minimize different types of thyroid cancer and their associated risks.
2. Having prophylactic (preventive) surgery
Alteration in particular genes can result in a higher chance of different thyroid cancer types. A person can get her or his thyroid eliminated to avoid getting cancer growth in this part.
3. Eating a healthy diet
A diet rich in veggies and fruits and low in animal fat; this can minimize the danger of different thyroid cancer types. According to the American Cancer Society, consuming around 5 servings of veggies and fruits each day can help prevent cancer. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and salmon can shield against several illnesses including thyroid cancer.
4. Radiation
Exposure to radiation, particularly in childhood, is one of the known and observed risk factors. Hence, radiation is avoided to treat illnesses that are not so severe. Radiation is exposed through CT scans and X-rays. So, one should undergo these tests only if absolutely necessary. Even when needed, lower radiation doses must be employed that are sufficient enough to do the job.
5. Genetic tests
To know about the gene mutations, genetic tests can be taken. These help to detect familial medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). In this way, MTC can be avoided and treated at an early stage by eliminating the thyroid gland. Other family members can also be examined for mutated genes.
If one has a family history of MTC, then it is crucial to check with a doctor who is well-versed with the latest genetic counseling and exams to detect and treat thyroid cancer. In children, the thyroid gland may be recommended to be removed to get rid of the abnormal gene.
The best chance for cure is to begin the treatment once the initial signs of cancer are noticed. Moreover, lower iodine levels in the diet should also be curbed either through supplementation or by having iodine-rich salt or iodine-enriched foods. Lower iodine levels in the body also block the creation of thyroid hormones.
Other than this, some of the following points can be followed to help keep thyroid cancer at bay.
- Radiation exposure has to be minimized.
- Stop smoking as it has toxins that impact the thyroid and interrupt with iodine intake.
- Avoid perchlorates and fluoride overdosages which can affect the health of the thyroid.
- Ease up on soy products and consume them in moderation.
- Receiving a diagnosis in the earlier stages is key to recovery as well as the treatment of thyroid cancer. Hence, getting regular thyroid checkups for lumps or swelling or other associated signs can help in the early detection of thyroid cancer.
Thyroid cancer types have no risk factors known, hence, prevention may be difficult.
